X-Windows Installation

Hummingbird Exceed (rev 2006.01)

To run EXAFSPAK on a local computer, it must have access to some method of doing graphics. Most often this is handled through X-Windows, so a server must be available to handle X-Windows graphics.

In the Scott group, this has historically been accomplished by purchasing the Hummingbird Exceed X-Windows software. This should be installed on your local computer first. If Exceed is not already installed on your local Windows systems, see if there is a recent installation CD in the group. If not, you can find how to purchase and download the server at http://www.hummingbird.com/products/nc/exceed/.

On a Mac OS X operating system, X11 should be installed. Regardless of whether EXAFSPAK will be run from a local installation or from a server, a local X-windows package must be available.

Cygwin/X (rev 2007.06)

An Open Source solution to X windows support is Cygwin/X. Cygwin provides a Unix-like API for the Windows OS and Cygwin/X provides X-windows functionality for the Cygwin environment.

To install Cygwin/X, go to http://x.cygwin.com/ and read about the software. On this page is a Download link that walks you through the installation process. We recommend saving the setup.exe file and running it locally. It is convenient to choose creation of a desktop shortcut.

During the installation, a list of the components to be installed is provided (below). You must choose to install the correct set of Cygwin/X components. First click the + sign in front of the X11 folder. Then, within this folder, make sure that the xorg-x11-base: Cygwin/X base is selected (checkbox under heading B = binary). When you check this, all other dependent components should be automatically checked also. (If, during the remainder of the installation, you get a message that some dependent components were not selected, you should choose to install them.)

To use Cygwin/X, you must first start Cygwin, then start Cygwin/X to generate an X window, within which you run the X-window dependent applications (e.g., MVIEW, MAVE, etc., of EXAFSPAK). Double-click on the Cygwin desktop shortcut and in the resulting window, use /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.bat to start Cygwin/X and open a new X-window. This window uses Unix-style commands that you can use to navigate a folder hierarchy of the Windows OS. Compare the next two figures to see this relationship. Note that the Cygwin-X installation starts in a /cygdrive directory in root, and Windows disks (e.g., C:\) are actually virtual directories within /cygdrive.
