XAS Tutorials EXAFSPAK Installation (rev 2006.01) NOTE: You must install X-Windows server software before you install EXAFSPAK. When you are ready to install EXAFSPAK, you can download it from the SSRL website. Go to www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu and click on the User Resources menu on the left margin. Under Experimental Support, choose Computer Services. On the resulting page in the left margin click on EXAFSPAK. (direct URL http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/exafspak.html). Read this page, then scroll to the bottom and click on Click here to download files. On the next page, under Downloads, click on the Microsoft Windows link (this tutorial is specific for the Windows installation). The page that appears discusses possible X-Windows clients and then gives instructions for downloading and installing EXAFSPAK. Make sure you have Exceed installed, then click on here under item 1 of the Installation procedure. Generally, you will be asked to confirm more than once that you actually want to run this installer. Then you are asked to identify a folder into which to unzip the package. You should create a folder somewhere called 'exafspak' or 'EXAFSPAK' (under C:\Program Files\ might be a good place). Once the download is complete, you should navigate to the folder you created, then follow Installation instruction 2: double-click on setup to run the InstallShield Wizard to install the package (see figure below).
Go through this wizard, clicking on Next> until you see the completed window; then click Finish. Your EXAFSPAK folder should fill up with lots of other documents. If you are using Hummingbird Exceed as your X-Windows server, then there is another set of instructions to be completed (see EXAFSPAK Windows installation webpage). Open a Command Window, which can be found on the Start menu under All Programs | Accessories | Command Window (don't use the Run command). In this window, first make sure your path includes the disk on which EXAFSPAK was just installed. If your path needs to be changed, just type C: (for example, if EXAFSPAK was installed on the C: drive). Then follow the instruction to change the directory to your EXAFSPAK default by typing cd %exafs%. The explicit path will be shown in the prompt. You can check what this path should be by looking at Environment Variables (see below) and looking at the definition of the exafs system variable. After confirming you are in the right directory, you can then del *.dll, then go to Control Panels (use the Classic View), double-click on system, click the Advanced tab, then click the button Environment Variables. In the list, find the display variable and Delete this definition, then highlight the Path variable and click Edit (see below). This variable is a list of paths, delimited by semicolons, that will be searched by default if a path isn't specified. If it does not already exist, add the path specified on the webpage. Make sure you verify that this path is correct for finding the Exceed version that you have installed (you should be able to follow the path through directory windows and find the Exceed program).
Now you should be able to use the Command Window to execute EXAFSPAK commands, which should always be executed from the directory in which the data files reside. You can test that this works by typing mview and hitting the Enter/Return key in any directory. You should see a new X-Windows window appear to tell you that you didn't specify any data files. scott@chem.uga.edu |
